Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
This 6200-acre refuge on the Fort Morgan peninsula provides a beautiful glimpse into the area's natural environment. Both the four-mile Pine Beach Trail and the one-mile Jeff Friend Trail wander through a variety of eco habitats. Forty-acre Gator Lake is perfect for non-powered boating and freshwater fishing. Fishermen also will enjoy the nearby lagoon, which features local favorites such as trout , flounder and crabs. Many birds also call the refuge home, especially during the spring and fall migratory seasons. 251-540-7720

Gulf State Park
Located in Gulf Shores this 6000 acre natural enclave features a variety of habitats, including 2.5 miles of beaches on four preserved stretches of sand. Nearby Lake Shelby provides 900 acres of freshwater fishing as well as boating and swimming. Nature trails meander throughout the wooded park, bringing visitors close to shores birds, maigratory species and other native wildlife. The park also hosts regular educational activities such as beach walks, hikes, presentations and wildlife exhibits at the Nature Center. Along the Gulf of Mexico, the park provides an

Alabama Coastal Birding Trail
Surrounded by water and untouched natural spaces, the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area makes a wonderful birding destination. The area's beaches and parks are great places to see shore birds such as gulls, terns and egrets as well we waterfowl. The region also hosts numerous migartory species during the spring and fall, when millions of birds cross the Gulf of Mexico. The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail was developed to showcase the region's many birding sites. The Gulf Shores-Orange Beach loop and the Fort Morgan loop of this well-documented trail bring birders to the best spost along Alabama's coast to see hunders of species.800-745-SAND
